A dinner circa 1959, With five notable subjects standing at a table littered with bottles, facing across a room toward an unknown speaker/spectacle. In addition to Castro (left to right): Cardinal Manuel Arteaga y Betancourt, archbishop of Havana from 1941 until forced to escape Castro's wrath in 1963 by diving into the Argentine Embassy (although he had once saved Castro's life by interceding with the pre-revolutionary authorities); Osvaldo Dorticós Torrado (second president of Cuba, 1959 until 1976); Haydee Santamaria, who as one of two women taken prisoner in the assault on the Moncada Barracks on July 26, 1953, had been with Castro since the beginning; and Antonio Nunez Jimenez, also a member of the revolutionary forces and later a celebrated anthropologist.
